It is with immense love and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Thomas Walter Allind—known affectionately to us as Tom, Tommy, or Kazzoo—on September 25, 2026. Born in Chicago, IL on August 7, 1963, Tom had an infectious zest for life, an inspirational work ethic, and a legendary sense of humor that could instantly lighten any room he walked (or rolled) into. He possessed a rare, standout talent and a deep, patient brilliance for solving unfamiliar problems. These traits served him beautifully during his illustrious career as a General Contractor, where he masterfully ran his own construction business prior to his injury.
While Tom was a man of great craft, his greatest dedication was always to his family and friends. He poured his heart into building a strong, unwavering foundation of love and community. His life was defined by this fierce commitment to the people around him; he focused his finest energy on nurturing deep, enduring relationships, leaving a lasting imprint of love, loyalty, and laughter on everyone he touched.
A fiercely competitive spirit, Tom tackled a spinal cord injury 14 years ago with unmatched determination and a quick wit, entirely refusing to let being a quadriplegic define his life or slow him down. Hockey was his true passion, and after his injury, he channeled that relentless athletic heart into sled hockey, proving to everyone that his drive and grit could never be sidelined. In recent years, Tom faced a new opponent when he was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). He fought this final battle with that same signature courage, dignity, and stubborn strength until it ultimately took his life.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Susan Allind, and their three beloved children, Leya Nolan (Nick), Michael Allind, and Sara Allind. He was the absolutely adored grandfather of his three granddaughters, Avery, Emilie, and Giulietta, who brought immense joy and pure sunshine to his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength for his siblings, Bill Allind (Carrie), Christine Sauer (Dan), Sophie Luffman (James), and Craig Allind (Cheryl). He was also an incredibly proud uncle to his 10 nieces and nephews: Jake, Dan, Beth, Jennifer, Eric, Jason, Kevin, Brian, Kirsten, and Adam. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Therese Allind. Each and every one of these individuals was a pillar in his life, walking alongside him through his journey, sharing in his grand accomplishments, his sorrows, and his endless jokes.
As we mourn the loss of Tom, let us also loudly celebrate a life beautifully, fully, and bravely lived. His memory will live on forever in the hearts of his loved ones, the hockey community and rinks he loved, the community he brought together, and the beautiful homes he so passionately constructed throughout his career. To honor the wonderful man Tom was and the incredible impact he made on us all, we encourage you to share your favorite stories, your funniest memories, and upload photos to his memorial page.
